At Ysgol Glan Gele, we use a range of reading scheme to ensure provision for all types of learners. In Reception children are introduced to letter sounds and phonics through the Jolly Phonics scheme.
This is a kinaesthetic approach to learning letter sounds and the children really enjoy learning the songs and actions to accompany each of the 42 sounds.
They begin with reading the sounds and then blending these sounds to read words. Once they have begun this process they are introduced to their first reading books. We use Sound Start and Floppy Phonics decodable books to begin with. Later the children progress to use Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn and Rigby Star reading schemes. These are the structures reading schemes that the school follows. Progression is clearly laid out and a wide range of reading material is available at each level.
