Year 1
Welcome to Year One!
We have two classes; these are The Hedgehogs and The Squirrels. We follow a creative, skills based curriculum which supports the transition from Reception into Year One.
At the start of our topics we find out what the children already know and then extend their learning further. Some of our topics are:
- Toys
- Sculpture
- Our local Area
- Celebrations
- Puppets
- Ourselves
We encounter a range of experiences by inviting interesting visitors into school, working with our local community and planning educational visits which enhance and consolidate learning for children in year 1. Teachers work hard to make learning experiences lively and interesting for the children. Some of these include:
- Plays and productions from theatre companies
- Workshops with real musicians and artists
- Walks around our local area
- Schools trips and visits to exciting places!
The children are now familiar with letter sounds and ‘Jolly Phonics’ and we now continue their learning by introducing new blends and sounds along with High Frequency words. This learning is shared between home and school on a regular basis. We now introduce new reading schemes such as Floppy’s Phonics and Rigby Star. We have a daily Reading Workshop where children learn to improve their skills in a variety of ways.
As in all year groups, we encourage a friendly, happy classroom environment where children feel secure and motivated to learn.
