Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 at Ysgol Glan Gele where we have 3 classes -

Hedgehogs, Squirrels and Owls.

We enjoy a ‘Meet the Teacher’ session with our parents early in the first half term to introduce ourselves and tell you how we work in Year 1.  We give all sorts of information that you may already know about such as school dinner prices and our fruit routines,  PE kit, etc,  but we also share many new things with you such as how we run our reading and spelling homework tasks, our swimming regimes and our general Year 1 routines.

We follow a creative, skills based curriculum which supports the transition from Reception into Year One and we embrace the Foundation Phase curriculum and the Literacy and Numeracy Framework.

The children have the chance to access a wide range of activities and topics throughout the year. The children get to choose from a variety of themes what they would like to learn about. Some of the topics we may choose to study include ‘Superheroes’, ‘Good Glorious Food’, ‘Mini Zoo’, 'Wriggle and Crawl’, 'Happiness and Holidays' and ‘Toy Box’.

We have the chance to attend Forest Schools and Beach Schools throughout the year, and have the opportunity to attend a range of lunchtime and after school clubs.

We encounter a range of experiences by inviting interesting visitors into school, working with our local community and planning educational visits which enhance and consolidate learning for children in Year 1.  Teachers work hard to make learning experiences lively and interesting for the children.  Some of these include:

  • Plays and productions from theatre companies
  • Workshops with real musicians and artists
  • Walks around our local area
  • School trips and visits to exciting places!

As in all year groups, we encourage a friendly, happy classroom environment where children feel secure and motivated to learn.
