Welcome to the Kookaburras Class Page!

The Kookaburras Class is a Reception class and we currently have 22 pupils. We like to have lots of fun and learn a range of new skills every day.

School starts at 8:45am so please make sure you arrive at school on time! Pick up time is at 3:15pm.

Here is some important information that you may find helpful...

  • Reading days - The children have allocated reading days, however, please ensure that you send your child's book bag in every day. You will find your child's reading day on the sticker placed on their reading record. Initially, the children will bring home picture books and story books until they are blending independently.
  • Snack - Please a piece of fruit in for snack with your child every day. If you send your child in with grapes, please ensure they are cut in half, lengthways. The children will be given milk/water at snack time but please feel free to send in a bottle of water that they can drink it throughout the school day.
  • PE - Our PE sessions will take place every Tuesday. The PE day will change so please keep an eye on Seesaw and this page for updates! Please ensure that your child arrives at school wearing their PE kit. They can wear a t-shirt, jacket and shorts or jogging bottoms for their PE sessions.
  • Homework - The children will bring home their Learning Logs on a Friday. Please can these be returned the following Wednesday. This gives us time to mark their work, share it with the class and prepare the next set of activity. It is important that you support your child to complete their enquiry tasks. Some enquiry tasks may be set online via Purple Mash, Reading Eggs or MathsSeeds.
  • Share Sessions - Our share sessions take place every Monday between 3.15 - 3.30pm. Please feel free to pop in for a chat if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Forest/Beach School - The children will access outdoor sessions throughout the year. I will notify you when these will take place!

 

Over the School Year, we will cover a variety of topics to develop our skills and knowledge. We will have the opportunity to go on trips to enrich our learning experiences.

Where does our food come from?

What is a farm?

 

During this topic, we will be:

·      Going on a school trip to Manorafon Farm.

·      Learning about where our food comes from.

·      Learning about Farm to Fork.

·      Finding out about which animals live on a farm.

·      Matching animals to their young.

·      Learning about what to eat to keep our bodies healthy.

·      Listening and responding to the story ‘The Enormous Turnip’ using the Talk 4 Writing approach.

·      Carrying out science investigations linked to our topic.

·      Creating a map for Old Macdonald’s farm.

·      Giving Old Macdonald directions to navigate his way around the farm.

 

We will also be…

·      Taking part on Outdoor Learning week.

·      Celebrating Holi.

London

During this topic, we will be:

·      Taking part in an Immersion Day all about London.

·      Building landmarks from London.

·      Looking at the London artwork of Rhiannon Roberts and   

       Aysha Tengiz.

·      Learning about important places in London.

·      Finding out what tourists like to do in London.

·      Reading the time on Big Ben.

·      Talking about King Charles and the Royal Family.

·      Having a Royal tea party.

 

We will also be…

·      Preparing for and participating in the Ysgol Glan Gele               Eisteddfod.

·      Listening and responding to the story of ‘Dewi Sant’.

·      Celebrating World Book Day.

·      Taking part in gymnastics and PE sessions.

·      Taking part in Fairtrade Fortnight.

·      Celebrating Easter and taking part in the Easter bonnet.

What makes Wales special?

 

During this topic, we will be:

·      Making and tasting traditional Welsh food e.g. Welsh cakes, bara brith and leek and leek and potato soup.

·      Designing and making love spoons.

·      Asking the grown ups in school, what makes Wales special to them.

·      Exploring and recreating the artwork of the Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts.

·      Learning a traditional Welsh ‘Dawnsio Gwerin’.

·      Learning about famous people in Wales.

·      Learning and retelling the story of Santes Dwynwen through the Talk 4 Writing approach.

 

We will also be…

 

·      Sharing New Year promises.

·      Taking part in gymnastics and PE sessions.

·      Sharing our dreams and goals during our Jigsaw sessions.

·      Completing the Spring term assessments.

·      Taking part in a Deep Dive week with a science and technology focus.

·      Exploring Bonfire Night, Diwali, Remembrance Day and Christmas.

·      Discussing and sharing experiences of different celebrations from around the world.

·      Making links with Christian celebrations and celebrations from other religions.

·      Taking part in a Nativity performance.

·      Looking and discussing at how everyone is different and the same.

·      Experimenting and problem solving.

·      Creating Christmas Crafts.

·      Having a class party!

 

We will also be…

·      Using the Read, Write, Inc scheme of work.

·      Developing our knowledge and understanding using the Numicon Shapes.

·      Taking part in gymnastics sessions.

·      Taking part in Christmas celebrations.

·      Raising money for Children in Need.

  •     Talking about our friends and family and where we live.
  •     Exploring talents and hobbies and what makes us special.
  •     Talking about how old we are and how we celebrate birthdays.
  •     Learning about the Ysgol Glan Gele Brain Buddies and Dragons and how they help us with our learning.
  •     Exploring the artist Picasso and recreating his artwork.
  •     Learning to retell the story of ‘Little Charlie’.

 

We will also be…

  •     Learning to read and write Set 1 sounds using the Read, Write, Inc scheme of work.
  •     Developing our knowledge and understanding using the Numicon Shapes.
